Burnt Biscuits

Hey guys,

New Experiences:

Being sick in Italy is not any better than being sick in America. It is not serious. I am convinced it is a little bit of whatever the kids had (fevers/throwing up) mixed with altitude stuff (headache) mixed with no caffeine and different food. The Dr. (oh, yes they took me to the Dr. against my will btw) was throwing around Influenza and cold interchangeably so I am not sure if I have the flu or just a cold (I say cold but I didn’t need to go to the dr. anyway). She assured me that it was not “the pig,” as she put it. So, anyway, hospitals in Italy look like our hospitals. The experience, however, is different than at home. Here, you sit down and she sits down and you discuss what feels wrong. Then, the Dr. tells you what she thinks it is. They don’t check your ears and throat and all that good stuff like in America. You just talk about what is different. They were all very concerned about a migraine. I am appreciative that they are concerned about me, just in case I really do get sick or something. It also makes me feel better that I won’t have to jump through a lot of red tape while sick just to get some antibiotics or something.

Tonight I am making biscuits because I must have something that is a comfort food; high altitude biscuits, to make it harder. So, pray that I don’t set the house on fire. I am a bread maker, though, so this should be ok. I found a high altitude recipe and translated the ingredients into Italian so we shall see what I come up with. I may attempt white gravy if it goes well. Who knows? Living life on the edge…

So, that’s it for the new stuff. The kids are picking wild strawberries on the mountain right now. They are tiny strawberries, the size of tiny raspberries. They are kind of sour but still really good. They remind me of the strawberries and blueberries that come in muffin mixes, small and good.

Let’s see, anything about life you should know…oh, they like peach juice. I don’t know if I told you that but it is big here. It reminds me of the syrup that comes in canned peaches. It is thick but growing on me. I have decided that you will start to like anything if you eat it long enough (i.e.: fizzy water).

I do need to mention just how unbelievable God has been since I have been here. I was just thinking about how He has supplied for my every need and really most of my wants since day 1. It is crazy just how Jesus just keeps putting everything together. Not only do I get to be in these amazing places but the sites I want to visit, He just keeps surprising me with opportunities to go. The family I am with goes to Venice and Florence so I will get to see those areas. I will get to travel outside of Italy so I am thinking about Athens, Greece or Berlin, or something. Even things like I was craving watermelon (and didn’t want to ask) and the family randomly bought a watermelon. I needed Tylenol and I had no idea where to get any (and didn’t have time to get there when the store was open) and He made an opportunity for someone to show me. I can’t tell you all of the ways I just keep seeing God take care of me. I keep praying for opportunities to share of Him with others and see His reason for my visit here. Please keep that in your prayers for me.
Thanks guys! I hope you are all having a wonderful week. Enjoy your end of July and beginning of August. Have some sweet tea and cheese grits (from T-Rays if you can). I’ll talk to you later.

P.S.- Update on the biscuits. Dont quit my day job. I tried regular biscuits. I tried high altitude biscuits. By the end I was throwing things in a bowl and mixing it up in desperation. Nada. So, it is back to the drawing board. I can make white bread from scratch and it comes out beautifully but biscuits, that every Little House on the Prarie fan can make, escape me. Maybe I'll have better luck at the sea. Or, Ill just quit cooking. That is always an option...

I was born to live in Italy. Reason 1: Time means nothing Reason 2: You work if you want to Reason 3: They drive 100 kilometers an hour everywhere Reason 4: The food is amazing This goes on to reason, like, 50000 but I'll stop here. On the way up here we never went under 80 kilom an hour. There were tunnels with the sides almost brushing the car and we went 100 kilometers an hour. In these tunnels we would pass cars or bikes in front of us with oncoming traffic close enough to see the drive. They simply moved as close to their side of the wall as they could and we taxied the line. I love it. The lines on the road are more like guidelines for where you should merge next. These little cars can haul. We swam in the most amazing pool complex today. It had 2 kiddie pools with slides and toys, a whirlpool/lazy river thing, an indoor/outdoor pool, a 4 seasons pool, recliners in the pool with jets, etc. There was even a slide that went through the complex and 2 lap pools. It was so much fu
Ok, update number whatever. I don’t know what day it is anymore. Today we drove to Elba. Well, we drove 4 hours and then took a ferry ride and then drove 30 minutes to get to the house. Let me tell you- it was 100/% completely worth it. This is hands down the most beautiful place I have ever been in my life (sorry Seattle). There are pictures at the bottom. Beautiful does not describe it. The view from the house is amazing and the house itself is probably the coolest house I have ever been in. It is maybe 5 floors of sprawling Tuscany goodness. If I ever build a house I am asking for the floor plan. It can probably sleep 20 people but it has rooms in nooks and up staircases and in what one might think was a closet, but no it’s a room. They all have balconies to see the view and the grounds are amazing. I don’t know if I mentioned it but there is no air conditioning here. I don’t think the family car has it. I don’t know how they do it but the houses feel cool and are airy and bright. I
Hey everyone, Let’s see....I went waterskiing this week. Thanks to grandpa for teaching me how to slalom. It is more difficult in the ocean than the nice flat lake and I had to drop a ski because the boat wasn’t powerful enough to haul my big butt out of the water on one ski. Nevertheless, I had a fun time and made it before I did a spectacular flip/ nose-dive. I forgot how sore it makes you the next day and I couldn’t make a fist because I used all of those wrist muscles to pull myself out of the water. It was so much fun. Yesterday some friends of the family from NY came. We spent the day on the boat I got to spend some time talking with people who spoke English. The family was so nice I we had a lot of fun swimming and bouncing on the waves. They pointed out something that I never noticed about Elba. There are no clouds here. It never rains because it is the summer time (that isn’t weird) but I realized that it is kind of a strange thing that I could never quite pu
